Kevin’s Portal: Work Has Begun

Yeah – I have been able to start work on getting the Portal back online and updated. I’m particularly concerned with getting the basics back up and running before I get too tricky with sprucing the site up with a lot of photos, videos, etc. At least each page should be working properly again soon.

The home page has been completed, as well as the photo and video pages, accessible via the directory in the left-hand column. All my video sites are included (I think), but only a small portion of photo-related sites that I currently use. I have also removed a number of redundant sites that are no longer in existence.

The home page has seen a few changes, with all of the social media buttons and widgets removed, the various Blog feeds are now all in the right-hand column and I have removed everything Facebook with the exception of the Facebook link in the site directory. I think this is a far better and working format then I had before.

Kevin’s Portal: The Latest News

I have had an extended break from much of my online web presence over the last 6 months, so plenty has changed over that time. Not necessarily intended change on my part, but change there has been. I have had to change hosting companies on some sites, web applications and social networks have come and gone, undergone change, etc. So as try to put all of the pieces together again, I will try and keep things updated on my progress in this Blog.

Kevin’s Portal: Shelfari Removed

I have just removed Shelfari from my social networks and web applications at Kevin’s Portal. I am no longer using this site and have posted about it at my Blog ‘At the BookShelf.’

Kevin’s Portal: Latest Update

I am currently overhauling the site to make it a little more useful. I think it was beginning to become a little too overcrowded and all over the place on the main page (what was the only page). This overhaul will be completed and go live on the 1st June 2011. There will be no further news or updates on this Blog until then – which isn’t too far away. Stay tuned.

Diaries: What to Do?

I was for quite some time bewildered as to what web application I could use for a private diary or journal. I carried out web searches and tested a few different applications (as well as software). I just couldn’t find anything that set out the journal in a way that I liked. The other thing was the fact that I like to test out web applications. So I just had to test out as many as I could. In the end I couldn’t settle on anything that I really liked.

Penzu seemed good – and it is. However, it didn’t have enough formatting options for me and I would have liked more ability to customize it also. But I didn’t want to let go of Penzu – especially if it improved over time and more features were added. Of course, there was always the concern about a web application suddenly closing down as well. What to do?

Suddenly it occurred me – what about WordPress.com? I love WordPress and use it for pretty much all of my Blogs – though I also have other Blogs that I use on Tumblr and Posterous for example (I love testing web applications remember). If there was a private option on WordPress.com than that would be brilliant – and there was. So that was the answer for me – use WordPress for my journal.

So I use both Penzu and WordPress, posting the same entries to both platforms. I like to use Namo WebEditor to write and format my enteries first though, just as I do for all of my WordPress Blogs. It gives me much more control that way. Of course Penzu is still limited in that area.

I thought I’d share that on the News at the Portal Blog because it could be a useful way for people to write their own diaries or journals should they wish to. Don’t rule out WordPress.com as an option – it’s great.

Kevin’s Portal: News at the Portal

I have been messing about with the Blog’s appearance and I think I have now settled on a theme. It has changed a bit over the last hour or so – should be right now.

Kevin’s Portal: History for Today

I just added a few extra features to Kevin’s Portal, including:

  • a link to my new Blog called ‘History for Today.’ This Blog is for the History section of the Tracing our History site.
  • the news feed for the Blog has also been added in the right column of Kevin’s Portal.
  • a link to the History section of Tracing our History has been added to the left column of Kevin’s Portal.

Blog: At the BookShelf – Facelift

I haven’t posted a lot to my Blog ‘At the BookShelf’ in recent times, which is something I intend to change now. To mark this renewed interest I decided to give the Blog a facelift. It looks far more impressive now – hopefully more content will come along as well.

Kevin’s Portal now has a Blog and Guestbook

Kevin’s Portal now has a Blog for posting news about the site. You’ll find posts about those places on the web where I have a presence and those places that I choose to leave. It’s all about where I am, why I am there, when I got there and what I’ll do there – as well as when I leave there, should I choose to do so. It should be an interesting journey.

There is also a page on the Blog that acts as a guestbook for Kevin’s Portal.
